To All Filipinos Everywhere (An Anonymous Letter) Maio 4, 2008

I used to think that corruption and criminality in the Philippines were caused by poverty. But recent events tell me this isn’t true. It is one thing to see people turn into drug addicts, prostitutes, thieves and murderers because of hunger and poverty, but what excuse do these rich, educated people have that could possibly explain their bizarre behavior? And to think I was always so relieved when petty snatchers got caught and locked away in jail because I never fully realized that the big time thieves were out there, making the laws and running our country. Can it get any worse than this?

Every night, I come home and am compelled to turn on my TV to watch the latest turn of events. I am mesmerized by these characters. They are not men. They are caricatures of men – too unreal to be believable and too bad to be real. To see these so-called “honorable” crooks lambast each other, call each one names, look each other in the eye and accuse the other of committing the very same crimes that they themselves are guilty of, is so comical and appalling that I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. It is entertainment at its worst!

I have never seen so many criminals roaming around unfettered and looking smug until now. These criminals wear suits and barongs, strut around with the confidence of the rich and famous, inspire fear and awe from the very citizens who voted them to power, bear titles like “Honorable”, “Senator” , “Justice” , “General” and worse, “President.” Ironically, these lawless individuals practice law, make our laws, enforce the law. And we wonder why our policemen act the way they do! These are their leaders, and the leaders of this nation Robin Hoodlum and his band of moneymen. Their motto? “Rob the poor, moderate the greed of the rich.”

It makes me wonder where on earth these people came from, and what kind of upbringing they had to make them act the way they do for all the world to see. It makes me wonder what kind of schools they went to, what kind of teachers they had, what kind of environment would produce such creatures who can lie, cheat, and steal from an already indebted country and from the impoverished people they had vowed to serve. It makes me wonder what their children and grandchildren think of them, and if they are breeding a whole new generation of improved Filipino crooks and liars with maybe a tad more style but equally negligible conscience. Heaven forbid!

I am an ordinary citizen and taxpayer. I am blessed to have a job that pays for my needs and those of my family’s, even though 30% of my earnings go to the nation’s coffers. Just like others in my lot, I have complained time and again because our government could not provide enough of the basic services that I expect and deserve. Rutty roads, poor educational system, poor social services, poor health services, poor everything. But I have always thought that was what all third world countries were all about, and my complaints never amounted to anything more.

And then this. Scandalous government deals. Plundering presidents pointing fingers. Senators associated with crooks. Congressmen who accept bribes. Big time lawyers on the side of injustice. De Venecia ratting on his boss only after his interminable term has ended, Enrile inquiring about someone’s morality! The already filthy rich Abalos and Arroyo wanting more money than they or their great grandchildren could ever spend in a lifetime. Joker making a joke of his own “pag bad ka, lagot ka!” slogan. Defensor rendered defenseless. Gen. Razon involved in kidnapping. Security men providing anything but a sense of security. And it’s all about money, money, money that the average Juan de la Cruz could not even imagine in his dreams. Is it any wonder why our few remaining decent and hardworking citizens are leaving to go work in other countries?

And worst of all, we are once again saddled with a power-hungry president whose addiction has her clinging on to it like barnacle on a rusty ship. “Love (of power) is blind” takes a whole new meaning when PGMA time and again turns a blind eye on her husband’s financial deals. And still blinded with all that is happening, she opts to traipse around the world with her cohorts in tow while her country is in shambles.

They say the few stupid ones like me who remain in the Philippines are no longer capable of showing disgust. I don’t agree. Many like me feel anger at the brazenness of men we call our leaders, embarrassment to share the same nationality with them, frustration for our nation and helplessness at my own ineffectuality. It is not that I won’t make a stand. It is just that I am afraid my actions would only be futile. After all, these monsters are capable of anything. They can hurt me and my family. They already have, though I may not yet feel it.

But I am writing this because I need to do something concrete. I need to let others know that ordinary citizens like me do not remain lukewarm to issues that would later affect me and my children. I want to make it known that there are also Filipinos who dream of something better for the Philippines. I want them to know that my country is not filled with scalawags and crooks in every corner, and that there are citizens left who believe in decency, fairness, a right to speak, a right to voice out ideas, a right to tell the people we have trusted to lead us that they have abused their power and that it is time for them to step down. I refuse to let this country go to hell because it is the only country I call mine and it is my responsibility to make sure I have done what I could for it.

Those of us who do not have the wealth, power or position it needs to battle the evil crime lords in the government can summon the power of good. We can pray. We can do this with our families every night. We can offer petitions every time we celebrate mass. We can ask others to pray, too, including relatives and friends here and overseas. And we can offer sacrifices along with our petitions, just so we get the message to Him of our desperation in ridding our nation of these vermin. After all, they cannot be more powerful than God!

I implore mothers out there to raise your children the best way you can. Do not smother, pamper, or lavish them with too much of the material comforts of life even if you can well afford them. Teach them that there are more important things in this world. I beg all fathers to spend time with their children, to teach them the virtues of hard work, honesty, fair play, sharing, dignity and compassion “right from the sandbox” till they are old enough to go on their own. Not just in your homes, but at work, in school, everywhere you go. Be good role models. Be shining examples for your children so they will learn to be responsible adults who will carry and pass on your family name with pride and honor.

I call on educators and teachers, we always underestimate the power of your influence on the minds of our youth. Encourage them to be aware of what is happening in their surroundings. Instill in them a love of their country, inculcate in them the value of perseverance in order to gain real, worthwhile knowledge, help us mold our children into honorable men and women.. Encourage our graduates, our best and brightest, to do what they can to lift this country from the mire our traditional politicians have sunk us into. The youth is our future and it would be largely because of you, our educators, that we will be able to repopulate the seats of power with good leaders, presidents, senators, congressmen, justices, lawmakers, law enforcers and lawful citizens.

I ask all students, young people and young professionals everywhere to look around and get involved in what is happening. Do not let your youth be an excuse for failure to concern yourselves with the harsh realities you see. But neither let this make you cynical, because we need your idealism and fresh perspective just as you need the wisdom of your elders.. YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU! Let your voices be heard. Do what you can for this land that gave you your ancestors and your heritage.. Use technology and all available resources at hand to spread good. Text meaningful messages to awaken social conscience. Try your best to fight moral decay because I promise you will not regret it when you become parents yourselves. You will look back at your past misdeeds and pray that your children will do better than you did.

Remember that there are a few handfuls who are capable of running this country. You can join their ranks and make their numbers greater. We are tired of the old trapos. We need brave idealistic leaders who will think of the greater good before anything else. I voted for Atty. Martin Bautista and his team and I sure hope they will run again. Do your utmost to excel in your chosen field. Be good lawyers, civil servants, accountants, computer techs, engineers, doctors, military men so that when you are called to serve in government, you will have credibility and a record that can speak for itself.

For love of this country, for the future of our children, for the many who have sacrificed and died to uphold our rights and ideals, I urge you to do what you can. As ordinary citizens, we can do much more for the Philippines than sit around and let crooks lead us to perdition. We owe ourselves this. And we owe our country even more.

Qué están haciendo los hispanos en los EE.UU Maio 2, 2008

Hoy es el Día Internacional del Trabajo y la oficina del Censo de los EE.UU nos está diciendo que los hispanos (o latinos como mas gustan llamarlos en Norteamérica) son el 15% del país, ahora son 45,5 millones de gentes cuya lengua materna es el Espanol y 16 son los estados que tienen una población hispana de más de medio millón. Sin embargo, por los reportes de prensa que hemos leído, se cree que algunos grupos han reducido sus esfuerzos en términos de marchas, en el día de hoy, El Dia del Trabajo. Según ellos, nuevas estrategias son necesarias e incluso dicen que las grandes marchas ya no funcionan.

Si los hispanos/latinos quieren realmente el cambio o el cumplimiento de la promesa de poder provocado por las estadísticas demográficas y que por supuesto son una realidad en este país, entonces también debe haber una concertación respecto de la educación, no sólo de nuestra juventud ( Casi el 25% de los niños menores de 5 son latinos) en el sentido tradicional de la educación, sino de todos nosotros con un nuevo enfoque. Debemos abrazar el internet y la tecnología y utilizarlos no sólo para la diversión y juegos, sino para un renacimiento de los conocimientos, una revolución de las noticias o la comunicación de las noticias, distribución de la información para el crecimiento personal y societal.

En verdad, no importa lo que otros digan, este país necesita a los hispanos. Con todos los ancianosque se jubilan, éste país se enfrenta a un futuro, digamos interesante,donde se pueden muy bien acoger a los inmigrantes. Los que ya están aquí deben estar dispuestos a ayudar al país y a los inmigrantes en su constante evolución como una de las principales democracias del mundo. Este país y sus ciudadanos (hispanos, negros o blancos) no deben temer el cambio. El cambio es la forma en que los EE.UU país se estructuraron. Efectivamente, todos sabemos que el cambio puede ser difícil, pero oponerse a ese cambio es a la vez inútil y contraproducente. En lugar de ello, todos deben tratar de ser lo más inteligentes que puedan para mitigar las formas de hacerle frente al cambio, porque no se trata sólo de la reforma de inmigración [en], pero el futuro de este país.

El autor de este post podría continuar rasgándose la garanta (figurativo porque lo que que hace es escribir con sus manos), pero se debe a que cree firmemente que con el conocimiento y su utilización (es decir, educación) es que los hispanos viviendo en los EE.UU (documentados e indoucmentados) podrían hacer y ser algo; y, ayudar a conformar un futuro promisorio para este gran país. Esa es una de las razones por las que he escrito éste post y que muy raramente publico en WUB.

نظم تجمع أوقفوا الحرب ببريطانيا مظاهرة أمام السفارة المصرية في لندن يوم الجمعة الماضي 10 ابريل للتضامن مع عمال غزل المحلة… كما تم تسليم بيان للسفارة المصرية للتضامن مع عمال ومواطني المحلة ولإدانة الهجمة البربرية للنظام المصري على المتظاهرين المحتجين على ارتفاع الأسعاروقمع اضراب عمال الغزل والنسيج والمطالبة بالافراج الفوري عن المئات من النشطاء والعمال ومنهم لجنة تنظيم الاضراب والذين اعتقلهم النظام المصري على خلفية أحداث المحلة

نظمت حملة التضامن مع مصر في مدينة تورنتو الكندية مظاهرة تضامن مع عمال وأهالي المحلة الكبرى ، والنشطاء المعتقلين على خلفية اضراب 6 ابريل .. وذلك يوم الجمعة 10 ابريل من الخامسة الى السادسة والنصف مساءً أمام مكاتب مصر للطيران بتورنتو .. كما قامت بتوجيه خطاب الى السفارة المصرية بمدينة أتوا تدين فيه العنف الوحشي الذي واجه به النظام المصري المحتجين على انخفاض الدخول ومستوى المعيشة ، والمطالبين بتخفيض الأسعار مما أدى الى مصرع شخصين على الأقل وإصابة المئات .. ذلك فضلاً عن الإدانة التامة لاستمرار اعتقال مئات النشطاء والمواطنين في المحلة وعدد من المحافظات الأخرى في مصر … كما قامت بدعوة المواطنين الكنديين لإرسال خطابات إدانة الى البريد الالكتروني الشخصي للسفير المصري بكندا د-محمود السعيد

نحن ندين تدخل قوات الأمن (تماما كما فعلنا في الماضي) الذي كان له تبعات كارثية بوقوع اثنان من القتلى والعشرات من المصابين ومئات المعتقلين، من بينهم لجنة الاضراب من العمال
نضم أصواتنا إلى أصوات زملائنا المصريين في احتجاجهم ومعركتهم ونحن نطالب بالافراج الفوري عن جميع المعتقلين وتلبية كافة مطالبهم

وفي مدينة سان فرانسيسكو يجري الآن التحضير لمظاهرة أمام مبنى القنصلية المصرية يوم الجمعة المقبل 18-4 للتضامن مع عمال ومواطني المحلة الكبرى وادانة نظام مبارك القمعي الذي تعامل مع الاحتجاجات بمنتهى الوحشية مما أدى الى مقتل اثنين على الأقل وإصابة المئات من المواطنين .. ذلك بالإضافة الى مئات المعتقلين على خلفية الأحداث سواء من داخل المحلة أو من محافظات أخرى … فضلاً عن تكسير الكاميرات ومطاردة واعتقال الصحفيين مصريين كانوا أو أجانب

“”உள்ளே ஒரு மிருகம் காத்திருக்கிறது; தூண்டி விட்டால் அது வெறியோடு கிளம்பும்”, என்பது ஒரு சௌகரியமான பொய். மிருகத்தன்மை மாறி பரிணாம வளர்ச்சியடைவதுதான் மனிதத்தன்மை. பரிணாமம் பின்னோக்கிப் போகாது. குஜராத்தில் நடந்த வெறியாட்டம், தற்செயலாக தட்டி எழுப்பப்பட்ட மிருககுணம் அல்ல. அது இயல்பாக மனிதனிடம் உள்ள குணநலன்களை மழுங்கடித்து, பல காலமாக அவனது மூளையில் பதிய வைக்கப்பட்ட பேதவெறி; தன்னை விடத் தாழ்ந்தவனின் தலை சற்றே கூட நிமிரக்கூடாது எனும் ஆதிக்க வெறி; யதேச்சையாய் வெடித்த கலவரமல்ல, அது ஒரு திட்டமிட்ட வேட்டை.

“எதைச் செய்வது சரி, எப்படிச் செய்வது சரி’ என்பதெல்லாம், மனித மனம் நாளும் கற்றுத் தேர்பவை. மனவியல் கருத்தின்படி, ஊக்குவிக்கப்படுவன (மிட்டாயோ? கைதட்டலோ?) சரியானவை என்றும், தண்டிக்கப்படுவன (அடிக்கப்படுவதோ? ஒதுக்கப்படுவதோ?) தவறானவை என்றும், மனம் கற்றுக் கொள்கிறது. “தண்டிக்கப்பட மாட்டோம், தப்பிப்போம்’ என்று மனதுக்குத் தெரிந்தால் — தவறானதாகத் தெரிந்து வைத்தவற்றைக் கூட முயன்று பார்க்கத் துணியும். தண்டனை கிடைக்காது எனும் தைரியமும், ஓர் ஊக்குவிப்புதான். இப்படி மிருகத்தனமான செயல்கள், நேரடியாகவோ? மறைமுகமாகவோ? ஊக்குவிக்கப்பட்டால், மனம் “இதுவே நியாயம்’ என்றும் நம்பியிருக்கும்.

சரியான காரியங்களைச் செய்தபின் இயல்பாகவே மனதுக்குள் மகிழ்ச்சியும், பெருமையும் நிலவும். “வெட்டினேன், கொளுத்தினேன், கொன்றேன், கொள்ளையடித்தேன், கற்பழித்தேன்’ என்று பெருமையோடு பேசும் குஜராத் இந்து மதவெறியர்களின் மனங்கள், “அந்தக் காரியங்கள் நியாயமானவை, அவசியமானவை, சரியானவை’ என்று தீர்மானித்து விட்டதால்தான், இத்தனை ஆண்டுகள் கழித்தும் தங்களது வெறிச் செயல்களை “வீர சாகசங்களாகவும், வெற்றிச் சரித்திரங்களாகவும்’ அவர்கள் கொக்கரிக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களின் மனங்களுக்கென்றே ஒரு “கோணலான கல்வி’ தொடர்ந்து பாடமாகப் பதியவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

“திருடுவது, கொல்வது, கற்பழிப்பது போன்றவை சரி’யென்று, பொதுவாக எந்த மதத்திலும் கூறப்படுவதில்லை. ஆனாலும், அந்தக் கலவரமும், வெறியாட்டமும் மதத்தின் சார்பாகவே நடந்தது. “மிதமானவை, மூர்க்கக் கட்டமைப்பு இல்லாதவை’ என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்ளும் எல்லா மத மார்க்கங்களிலும் தாம் உயர்ந்தவர், கடவுளுக்கு அருகிலுள்ளவர் — தமது வழி வராதவரெல்லாம் தீயவர், தாழ்ந்தவர் என்ற மறைமுக போதனைகளும் உண்டு.

மேலோட்டமாகவேனும் நெறி புகட்டுவதாய் கருதப்படும் மதவரம்புகளை மீறி, அதைச் சார்ந்த ஒரு கூட்டம் வெறியாடுகிறது என்றால் — அந்தக் கும்பல் கயவர்களாலானது அல்லது அந்த மதநெறியே கோணலானது என்றே அர்த்தம். மேல் கீழ் எனும் பேதவெறியை தொடர்போதையாக ஊட்டி விட்டால், “தர்மம்’ என்பதற்கே ஒரு புதிய அர்த்தம் தோன்ற ஆரம்பிக்கும்.

சமூக சட்ட அங்கீகாரமற்ற கோரச் செயல்களில் இவர்கள் ஈடுபடுவதற்குக் காரணம், உள்ளே வேரூன்றிக் கிடக்கும் “தான் உயர்ந்தவன்’ எனும் ஆணவம். இந்தப் போலி சமூகச் செல்வாக்கு “தன்னைவிடத் தாழ்ந்தவனை மிதிக்கலாம்’ என்பதற்கு ஒரு அனுமதி போன்றே அவர்களது மனத்திற்குள் தோன்றும். இப்படியொரு கோணலான கண்ணோட்டத்தில் செய்த வன்முறை, வெறி, வரம்பு மீறல், கேவலம், கொடூரம் — எல்லாமே தக்க நேரத்தில் செய்த, சரியான காரியமாகவே அவர்களுக்குப் படும்.

அதனால்தான் அவர்களிடம் இது குறித்து வருத்தமும் இல்லை, வெட்கமும் இல்லை; குற்றமும் புரிந்து விட்டு, குறுகுறுப்பும் இல்லாதது மட்டுமல்ல, இவர்களிடம் சாதித்து விட்ட மமதையும் வெளிப்படுகிறது. இது வெறி மட்டுமல்ல, தண்டிக்கப் படாததால் வந்த தைரியம். கொலையும், கற்பழிப்பும், மனிதத்தன்மையே அல்ல என்பதை உணரக்கூட முடியாத அளவுக்கு உள்ளே மதவெறியும், ஆதிக்கத் திமிரும் வளர்ந்திருக்கிறது. இது ஆபத்தானது.

பொதுவாக, ஒரு போரின் முடிவில், வென்றவர்கள் தோற்றவர்களின் உடைமைகளை (பொருள்களை, பெண்களை) கொள்ளையடிப்பது, காலங்காலமாய் இருக்கும் ஒரு கோணலான நியதி. வெற்றிபலம், தோல்விபலவீனம் என்று ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்படுவதால், “பலவீனமானவர்களைக் கொள்ளையடிப்பதும், கொல்வதும், கற்பழிப்பதும், தவறு’ என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக, “யுத்த தர்மம்’ என்றே இது போற்றப்பட்டு வந்துள்ளது. குஜராத்தில் நடந்தது யுத்தமா?

“எதிரிகள் மனிதர்களேயல்ல’ என்ற மூர்க்க சித்தாந்தம்தான் ஒரு படையைத் தூண்டிவிட முடியும். குஜராத்தில் சேர்ந்தது ஒரு பரிதாபகரமான படை. இதுநாள்வரை, ஒதுக்கித் தாழ்த்தி வைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு கூட்டம், சண்டைபோட மட்டும் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்டது. “தாங்கள் தாழ்வாகக் கருதப்பட்டவர்கள்’, என்பதை மறந்து, “தம்மிலும் தாழ்ந்தவனாக ஒரு எதிரியை அவர்கள் பார்த்தார்கள். இந்தப் போலி தர்மத்திற்கான யுத்த நேரத்தில் “ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்தியவன் தன் தோளோடு தோள் நிற்கிறானே’ என்ற பொய்யான மகிழ்ச்சி, கூட்ட மனப்பான்மையில் “கொலைவெறி’யாகவும் மாறிவிட்டது. போர்ப்படை என்பதும் ஒரு கூட்டம்தான்.

எல்லாக் கூட்டங்களிலும், எப்போதுமே ஒரு தலைவன் உண்டு. அவனது ஆணைப்படியே அந்தந்த கூட்டம் இயங்கும். யதேச்சையாகத் திரளும் கூட்டங்களைத் தவிர, ஒரு இயக்கமாக, கட்சியாக, மதமாக அமையும் கூட்டங்கள், தலைவனை நேரில் பார்க்காத போதும் ஆணைகளைப் பின்பற்றும். இவ்வகைக் கூட்டங்களுக்கு “தலைவன் சொல்வதே சரி, அவன் ஆணைப்படி நடப்பதே சரி’ எனும் ஒரு மூர்க்கப் பின்பற்றுதல் சிந்தனை அமையும். இவ்வகைத் தலைவன், எதிரியை அடையாளம் காட்டித் தன் கூட்டத்தையே போரிட வைக்க முடியும்.

தான் அடையப் போகும் பெரிய லாபத்திற்காக, இந்தக் கூட்டத்திலுள்ள வேலைக்காரர்கள் அடையும் அற்ப சந்தோஷங்களை அவன் கண்டு கொள்ள மாட்டான். சில எலும்புத் துண்டுகளை, அவனது வெறிநாய்கள் தாங்களாகவே பொறுக்கிக் கொள்வதும், அவனுக்கு வசதியாகவே அமையும். போர் முடிந்து, வெற்றி கிடைத்த பிறகுதான் “கூட்டத்துக்குத் தலைவன்’ கொஞ்சம் தெரிவான். ஒன்றாக வெறியாடி, அவனுக்கு வெற்றி தேடித் தந்தவர்களில் சிலரே உயர்வார்கள். தற்காலிகக் கூலியாக மட்டுமே மற்றவர்கள் ஒதுக்கப்படுவார்கள். சாணக்கிய ரீதியில், இது “ராஜநீதி’ என்றும் கூட ஏற்கப்படும்.

இவ்வளவு யுத்த தந்திரங்களோடு செயல்பட்டு ஒடுக்குமளவு, குஜராத்தில் யார் எதிரி? அடிபட்டவன், என்ன தவறுகள் செய்தான்? இது பழிவாங்குதல் என்றால், பழிதான் என்ன? தொடர் தவறுகளின் ஆரம்பம் எது? மதவெறியே அடிப்படைக் காரணமென்றால், வெறியூட்டும் மதத்திலுள்ள தவறுகள் எவை? நேற்றுவரை தெருவில் சந்திக்கும்போது சிரித்துப் பழகிய பெண்ணை, இன்று துரத்திக் கற்பழிப்பதும், கொல்வதும் சாத்தியம் என்றால் அவ்வெறியை ஊட்டியது யார்? ஊக்குவிப்பது யார்?

தொலைக்காட்சியிலும் பத்திரிக்கையிலும், இது குறித்து மேலோட்டமாகத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு, கொஞ்சமாக முகம் சுளித்து, மிகக் குறைந்த அளவில் வருத்தப்படும் நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்திற்கும், இதிலுள்ள வக்கிரமும் உக்கிரமும் புரியவே செய்கிறது. வழக்கமான கோழைத்தனம் வாயை மூடிவைத்தாலும், தேர்தலில் வரக்கூடிய தைரியம் என்ன ஆனது?

வெறிச் செயல்களுக்கு ஆதரவாக வாக்களிப்பதும், அச்செயல்களை ஊக்குவிப்பதேயாகும். நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்தின் இந்த மௌனமான மறைமுகமான ஊக்குவிப்பிற்குக் காரணம், சுயநலம் மிகுந்த அச்சம்; “ஜெயிக்கும் குதிரை மேலேயே பணம் கட்டலாமே’ எனும் சூதாட்ட மனப்பான்மை; வெல்பவன் பலசாலி – அவனை எதிர்ப்பதை விட கூட்டு சேர்ந்து கொள்ளலாமே, என்ற கோழைத்தனமான “குயுக்தி’. இந்த நடுத்தர வர்க்கமும் ஒரு கூட்டம்தான்.

மூர்க்க வெறியோடும் மூட பக்தியோடும், ஒரு தவறான தலைவனைப் பின்பற்றும் கூட்டம், வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் போதெல்லாம் வெறியாட்டம் போடும். வேடிக்கை பார்க்கும் நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்தின் மௌனமே, இந்தக் கூட்டத்தை இன்னும் உரக்கச் சப்தமிட வைக்கும். “தன்னலக் குறிக்கோள்’ மட்டுமே கொண்ட தலைவனிடம் அடிமைப்பட்டுக் கிடக்கும் இந்தக் கூட்டம், “வெறியாடும் வாய்ப்பி’லேயே விடுதலையின் திருப்தியை அடையும். ஒரு முறை ருசித்த பிறகு, அடுத்த வெறியாட்ட வாய்ப்புக்குக் காத்திருக்கும். இந்தக் கூட்டத்தை, ஒதுங்கி நின்று பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் நடுத்தர வர்க்கம், வெறியலையில் ஒருநாள் சுலபமாக உள்ளிழுக்கப்பட்டுவிடும்.

தனி மனிதனுக்கு “தன் வீடு, தன் இடம்’ எனும் பாதுகாப்பான எல்லைகள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. வெளியே ஒரு கூட்டத்துக்குள் நுழையும்போது, அவனுக்குத் “தன் இடம்’ என்பதில்லாததால், ஒரு பாதுகாப்பின்மை உணர்வு ஏற்படுகிறது. இது ஒரு பயமாகவும் மாறுகிறது. இந்தப் பாதுகாப்பின்மையின் பயத்தை, அவன் கூட்டத்தின் எண்ணிக்கையில் சரி செய்ய முயலுகிறான். தன்னைப் போலவே, பல தனிமனிதர்கள் இருக்கும் கூட்டத்தாலேயே தைரியம் பெறுகிறான். கூட்டத்தின் அளவு அதிகரிக்கும்போது தனது தனித்தன்மையை மீறி, கூட்டத்தின் ஒட்டுமொத்தத் தன்மையில் கலக்கிறான். பெரும்பான்மை மக்கள் கூட்டத்தில் செம்மறியாடுகள் போலிருந்தாலும், அதில் ஒரு கும்பல் தலைவனின் கூலிப்பட்டாளமாகச் செயல்படும்.

இந்தக் கும்பல்தான் கொள்ளையடித்து, “யுத்தம்’ எனக் கூறி மற்றவர்களை இழுத்தும் செல்லும். எதிரியைத் தலைவனும், அவனுடைய கும்பலும் அடையாளம் காட்டும்போதே, கூட்டத்தில் “கொல்லப்படுமுன் கொல்’ எனும் ஆதி மனிதத் தற்காப்பு எண்ணம் ஊட்டப்படும். குஜராத்தில் எதிரிகளாகக் கூறப்பட்டவர்கள் கொல்ல வரவில்லை, பயந்தே ஓடினார்கள். கும்பலோடு கூட்டம் அவர்களை வேட்டையாடியது. சாதாரணக் கோழைகளுக்கு, “கூட்டம்’ ஊக்க மருந்தாக மட்டுமல்ல, பாதுகாப்புக் கவசமாகவும் மாறுகிறது.

கோழைகள் பயந்தவர்கள். “தண்டனையைத் தவிர்ப்பதே!’ அவர்களது அடிப்படை நோக்கம். ஆனால், கோழைகளுக்கு ஆசைகள் அதிகம். தண்டிக்கப்படாத வரை, எப்படியாவது ஆசைகளை அடையத் துடிப்பதே, அவர்களது சிந்தனைக்கோணம். நெறிகளின் பால், சமூகத்தின் மேல் அக்கறை என்பதை விடவும், சமூகத்தின் அனுமதியே அவர்களுக்கு முக்கியம்.

குஜராத்தில் அவர்களுக்கு சமூக அனுமதி, அரசியல் சலுகை, ஆசைகளுக்குத் தீனி, வெறிக்கு வடிகால், குற்றங்களுக்கு நியாயம் எல்லாமே கிடைக்கும் என்று தெரிந்த உடன், கோழைகளின் கூட்டம் “வீரர்களின் சேனை’யாகத் தன்னை நினைத்துக் கொண்டது. வெறியாட்டத்தைப் “போர்’ என்றும், அரசு பலத்தை “வீரமெ’ன்றும் கருதியவர்கள், பெருமையோடு இன்றும் திரிவது, அந்தச் சமூகம் தந்த அனுமதியோடுதான்.

அறிவும், பண்பும் இல்லாதது வீரமே அல்ல. மௌன கோழைத்தனம், இந்தப் போலி வீரத்தை மீண்டும் தூண்டும். முட்டாள்களும், கோழைகளும் இருக்கும் வரை, ஆதிக்க வெறியும், ஆணவமும் மிகுந்த அயோக்கியன் தலைவனாகவே தொடர்வான். வெறியூட்டினால், தனக்கே இறுதி வெற்றி, என்ற இறுமாப்பில், அவன் மேலும் பல திசைகளில், தன் பார்வையைத் திருப்புவான்.

போதையால் ஊட்டப்படும் வெறி, வெட்கப்படக்கூடிய அறிவை மழுங்கடிக்கும். சுயநலக் கோழைகள் மிகுந்த சமுதாயமும், அதைச் சுலபமாய் ஆட்டி வைக்கும் மோசடித் தலைமையும் “தொற்று நோய்’ போல நாடு முழுவதும் பரவும். அந்த ஆதாரக் கிருமியை அழித்தால்தான் வருங்காலத்திற்குப் பாதுகாப்பு –இது அவசியமானது மட்டுமல்ல, அவசரமாகவும் செய்ய வேண்டிய காரியம்.

Macedonia name-dispute: Open Letter to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Fevereiro 25, 2008

Open Letter to Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State, Washington D.C., regarding the name-dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Dear Madame Secretary:

On behalf of the nation-wide membership of the undersigned organizations we write to you to express our strong concerns regarding the administration’s continuing failure to properly address the name issue regarding the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as it relates to our interests and that of our most important ally in the Balkans Greece. The U.S. has important interests in Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The projection of U.S. interests in the region depends heavily on the stability of the region. Therefore, the U.S. has an important stake in fostering good relations among neighboring countries in the region.

To this effect, Greece is of vital importance in the region by virtue of among other factors, its geographic location and by being home to the most important naval base in the Mediterranean Sea, Souda Bay, Crete. There are thousands of visits by U.S. military ships and planes to Souda Bay and its adjacent air base annually. This sentiment has been expressed several times by our government in the past few years, by President Bush and by you, Madame Secretary.

Stability in the Balkans is not only critical for overall U.S. interests, but also because it serves the interests of every country in the Balkans. Greece is by far the most stable country, politically and economically, in the Balkans and the biggest investor with over 22 billions dollars. By contrast, FYROM is of limited significance to the national security interests of the United States.

Yet, FYROM continues to provoke Greece, usurping history which has been Hellenic for thousands of years, while FYROM refuses to negotiate in good faith over the name issue. Unfortunately, actions over the years such as distortion of geographic maps, naming its airport “Alexander the Great,” revisionist textbooks in schools, and inflammatory comments by top government officials, encourages new generations in FYROM to cultivate hostile sentiments against Greece. Further, this continuing systematic government policy will hinder FYROM’s accession to both the EU and NATO. This is the real threat to stability in the Balkans, to the detriment of U.S. interests.

We wish to remind you that currently there are over 100 members of the Congress who have signed onto H.Res. 356, calling on FYROM to cease it “hostile activities or propaganda” against Greece. As you prepare to meet today with Greece’s Foreign Minister, Dora Bakoyianni, we know that a main topic on the agenda will be the FYROM name issue and how this continuing unresolved issue threatens the forthcoming expected application of FYROM to join NATO. Since this issue first arose back in the year 1991-1992 the Greek American community has been against a permanent name for the neighboring state which would include the name Macedonia/Macedonian. The U.S. supports FYROM’s admission to NATO. Greece obviously objects to admission without a resolution to the name issue, and has stated it will use their veto, if necessary, which Greece is within her rights to exercise.

The immediate settlement of the name issue, in a way that is acceptable to Greece, will allow the United States’ strongest ally in the Balkans to be the driving force for FYROM’s membership to NATO and ultimately to the European Union FYROM’s “passport” to NATO and the European Union is Greece. Therefore, we call upon you, Madame Secretary, to please use your influence with FYROM to impress upon them to negotiate in good faith with Greece to resolve the name issue that would clearly differentiate that country from, Macedonia the northern province of Greece and its Hellenic history and for FYROM to cease immediately their irredentist propaganda against Greece, which violates the UN-brokered Interim Accord, as stated in Article 7 paragraph 1 of the Accord, signed in New York on September 13 1995 between FYROM and Greece. Only in this way will the interests of all parties be satisfied.

We write to you in the interests of the United States and for the support of our long-time and loyal ally Greece, who is our most important strategic partner in the region and the key country for stability in the region.

وقد كُتِب هذا الكتاب فى منتصف السبعينات، وشأنه شأن أي عمل آخر، فهو يحمل ملامح عصره. كانت بداية السبعينات في بريطانيا سنوات صراع قوي وناجح للطبقة العاملة: بلغ قمته فى تدمير “قانون العلاقات الصناعية” التابع لحكومة المحافظين بواسطة عمال الميناء والهندسة، وفك تجميد الأجور الذي قام به عمال المناجم فى 1972، وأخيراً إسقاط حكومة المحافظين التابعة لإدوارد هيث بواسطة إضراب عمال المناجم فى 1974

والكتاب الثاني هو

ماركسية تروتسكي —- دانكن هالاس

وهذا الكتاب يركز على أربعة موضوعات – وليست تلك الموضوعات هي كل ما أضاف تروتسكى للفكر الماركسي بأي شكل من الأشكال – لأنه كان كاتبا نادر العبقرية ذو اهتمامات واسعة بشكل غير عادي. ومع ذلك فإن عمل حياته كان مركزا بشكل أساسي على هذه المسائل تلك وتتعلق بها غالبية كتاباته الضخمة بشكل أو بآخر.

تلك المسائل هي، أولاً، نظرية الثورة الدائمة، وأهميتها للثورات الروسية في القرن العشرين وللتطورات اللاحقة في الدول المستعمرة وشبه المستعمرة، ما يعرف لليوم بـ “العالم الثالث“. ثانياً، ما نتج عن ثورة أكتوبر الروسية ومسألة الستالينية. لقد قام تروتسكى بالمحاولة الأولى المتسعة لتحليل مادي تاريخي للستالينية، وتحليله، بغض النظر عن أي انتقادات ممكن توجيهها له، كان نقطة البداية لكل التحليلات اللاحقة الجادة من وجهة نظر ماركسية. ثالثاً، استراتيجية وتكتيكات الحزب الثوري الجماهيري في مختلف الحالات وهو مجال لم تكن إضافة تروتسكى فيه أقل من إضافة ماركس ولينين، رابعاً، مسألة العلاقة بين الحزب والطبقة والتطوير التاريخي الذي أوقع الحركة الثورية في مركز هامشي بالنسبة للمنظمات العمالية الجماهيرية.
وقد وصف إسحاق دويتشر تروتسكى في سنواته الأخيرة “بالخلاصة المتبقية من الماركسية الكلاسيكية”. لقد كان هذا وأكثر. وهذا هو ما يعطى لفكره هذه الأهمية المعاصرة الضخمة

Socialism is an utopia!!!

Let me say something about a so called “real socialism” (that promoted by Lenin). After The Great October Revolution in Russia it very soon had become clear that Lenin’s system based on Marx and Engels economic treaties is an academic utopia, impossible to apply in the conditions of real economic challenges of a country devastated by war and fratricidal revolutionary slaughter. The below fragment from wikipedia article about Joseph Stalin, brings some light to the sad balance of his cruel regime. And that was just the beginning, since communist and socialist regimes during years 1945-1991 devastated the economies of half of the states of today’s European Union, (which I still remember, since I was born in 1977):

“…Early researchers attempting to tally the number of people killed under Stalin’s regime were forced to rely largely upon anecdotal evidence. Their estimates ranged from a low of 3 million to as high as 60 million. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 however, evidence from the Soviet archives finally became available. The archives record that about 800,000 prisoners were executed (for either political or criminal offences) under Stalin, while about 1.7 million died in the GULAG and some 389,000 perished during kulak forced resettlement — a total of about 3 million victims.

Debate continues, however, since some historians believe the archival figures to be unreliable. For example, some argue that the many suspects tortured to death while in “investigative custody” were likely not counted amongst the executed. Also, there are certain categories of victim which it is generally agreed were carelessly recorded by the Soviets — such as the victims of ethnic deportations, or of German population transfer in the aftermath of WWII.

Thus while some archival researchers have estimated the number of victims of Stalin’s repressions to be no more than about 4 million in total, others believe the number to be considerably higher. Russian writer Vadim Erlikman, for example, makes the following estimates: executions, 1.5 million; gulags, 5 million; deportations, 1.7 million (out of 7.5 million deported); and POWs and German civilians, 1 million — a total of about 9 million victims of repression.

Some historians have also included the 6 to 8 million victims of the 1932–1933 famine as victims of repression. This categorization is controversial however, as historians differ as to whether the famine was a deliberate part of the campaign of repression against kulaks or simply an unintended consequence of the struggle over forced collectivization.

Regardless, it appears that a minimum of around 10 million surplus deaths (4 million by repression and 6 million from famine) are attributable to the regime, with a number of recent books suggesting a likely total of around 20 million. Adding 6–8 million famine victims to Erlikman’s estimates above, for example, would yield a total of between 15 and 17 million victims. Pioneering researcher Robert Conquest, meanwhile, has revised his original estimate of up to 30 million victims down to 20 million. Others, however, continue to maintain that their earlier much higher estimates are correct…”
