On December 20 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a landmark Resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease. The Resolution designates World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year starting in 2007.

The UN Resolution makes World Diabetes Day stronger than ever and provides the opportunity for a significant increase in the visibility of the campaign and an increase in government and media participation on or around November 14. The Resolution will ensure even greater reach for awareness-raising activities throughout the diabetes world.

World Diabetes Day on November 14th, offers the opportunity to take a look at the disease that’s become the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. However, the good news is that millions and millions of people live and thrive with diabetes.

So, today, let’s to pay attention to the (second UN) World Diabetes Day. Take care with your and your family and friends (if not everybody) health!

“Human Rights and Dignity of People Living in Poverty”.

17 0ctober is the Interntional Day for the Eradication of Poverty, officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992.

On October 17, 1987, in reply to Joseph Wresinski’s appeal, 100,000 defenders of human rights gathered together on the Trocadero Plaza in Paris to express their refusal of extreme poverty, and to call on humankind to unite and ensure the respect of human rights. A Commemorative Stone proclaiming this message, was inaugurated on this occasion on the Plaza of Human Rights and Liberties (formerly Trocadero Plaza), at the place where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948. This was the beggining of this special day.

In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the theme for this year’s observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is “Human Rights and Dignity of People Living in Poverty”.

«World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy»

The World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO’s Member Countries at the Organization’s Twentieth General Conference in November 1979. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945. This is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger.

High food prices put World Food Day 2008 in the spotlight. The cost of food is climbing. people everywhere is affected and the poorest are hit hardest. Changing weather patterns and rising demand for biofuels are part of the problem. The theme for World Food Day 2008 is «World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy»

World Food Day provides an occasion to once again highlight the plight of 923 million undernourished people in the world. Most of them live in rural areas where their main source of income is the agricultural sector. Global warming and the biofuel boom are now threatening to push the number of hungry even higher in the decades to come.

“Intelligent and sustainable buildings”.

World Standards Day is celebrated internationally each year on October 14th. The day honours the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organizations such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which develops international standards for the electrical and electronics industries; International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) an international organization responsible for the coordination, development, regulation, and standardization of telecommunications standards.
World Standards Day began as a celebration of the birth of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which held its first meeting in London on October 14, 1946. From an initial roster of 25 countries, ISO (based in Geneva, Switzerland) now has 123 member nations and has evolved into the global clearinghouse for all standards activities.

The goal of World Standards Day is to raise awareness of the importance of global standardization to the world economy and to promote its role in helping meet the needs of business, industry, government, and consumers worldwide.

The theme of this year’s World Standards Day message is “Intelligent and sustainable buildings“.
