Universal Children’s Day is a day of global solidarity on behalf of children, and to promote activities supporting children’s well-being worldwide. It’s one of the oldest UN days, and carries particular significance in the 21st century because of the prominence of children’s issues in the Millennium Development Goals.

By resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children’s Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children.

The date 20 November, marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. Since its adoption by the United Nations, the Convention has been signed or ratified by more countries than any other international treaty.
