Αγαπητέ κύριε/κυρία,
“Πρέπει να καταλάβετε τι σημαίνουν για μας τα μάρμαρα του Παρθενώνα.. Είναι η υπερηφάνεια μας, είναι οι θυσίες μας. Είναι το ευγενέστερο σύμβολο τελειότητας. Είναι φόρος τιμής στη δημοκρατική φιλοσοφία. Είναι οι φιλοδοξίες μας και το ίδιο τ΄όνομα μας. Είναι η ουσία της ελληνικότητας”. Μελίνα Μερκούρη, ομιλία στην Όξφορντ Γιούνιον, 1986.
Τα αρχαία γλυπτά του Παρθενώνα, που σήμερα εκτίθενται στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο, δεν είναι αυτοτελή έργα. Είναι αναπόσπαστα εκ γενετής στοιχεία του Μνημείου του Παρθενώνα, του μείζονος και συμβολικού μνημείου του δυτικού πολιτισμού. Ορισμένα δε από τα στοιχεία αυτά είναι αναγκαία όχι μόνο για την αισθητική, αλλά και για την στατική επάρκεια του Μνημείου, όπως δείχνουν οι πρόσφατες εργασίες αναστήλωσης της Ακρόπολης.
Από τη δεκαετία του ’80, όταν η τότε υπουργός πολιτισμού της Ελλάδας Μελίνα Μερκούρη είχε ξεκινήσει τον αγώνα υπέρ της επιστροφής των γλυπτών, οι διοικήσεις του Βρετανικού Μουσείου αρνούνται πεισματικά το διάλογο. Υπάρχουν όμως επιχειρήματα που επιβάλλουν την επιστροφή των Μαρμάρων στην πατρώα γή τους:
πρώτον, διότι στην Ελλάδα τα Μάρμαρα θα εκτεθούν κοντά στον Παρθενώνα και σε οπτική επαφή αυτόν έτσι ώστε ο επισκέπτης να σχηματίζει πλήρη εικόνα του συνόλου του Μνημείου,
δεύτερον, διότι αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο τμήμα του μνημείου – συμβόλου του ελληνικού κλασικού πολιτισμού την στιγμή της ακμής του. Με την επιστροφή των Μαρμάρων θα αποκατασταθεί η ενότητα της διακόσμησης και η αρχιτεκτονική συνοχή του Μνημείου,
τρίτον, διότι το Νέο Μουσείο Ακροπόλεως είναι πλέον έτοιμο να φιλοξενήσει τα γλυπτά με την ίδια και μεγαλύτερη ασφάλεια απ’ ότι φιλοξενούνται στο Λονδίνο,
Η Βρετανία, την εποχή του λόρδου Έλγιν ήταν μια μεγάλη Αυτοκρατορία και η Ελλάδα μια υπόδουλη στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία επικράτεια. Σήμερα, 200 χρόνια μετά, οι δύο χώρες είναι δύο ανεπτυγμένες δημοκρατίες, συνεργαζόμενες στο πλαίσιο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Τα πράγματα και οι συνθήκες έχουν αλλάξει. Στο όνομα της δικαιοσύνης, της ηθικής και της εκτίμησης απέναντι στην παγκόσμια πολιτιστική κληρονομιά, καλούμε τη Βρετανική κυβέρνηση και τη διοίκηση του Βρετανικού Μουσείου, να εργαστούν προς την κατεύθυνση της επιστροφής των Μαρμάρων του Παρθενώνα στην Ελλάδα, τιμώντας το όνομα και την ιστορία του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου.

Dear Sir/Madam,
“You must understand what the Parthenon Marbles mean to us. They are our pride. They are our sacrifices. They are our noblest symbol of excellence. They are a tribute to the democratic philosophy. They are our aspirations and our name . They are the essence of Greekness”. Melina Mercouri, speech in Oxford Union, 1986.
The ancient sculptures of Parthenon, which today are exposed in London’s British Museum, consist an important part of the Athens Parthenon; a major and symbolic landmark of the Western civilization. Moreover, some of the sculptures themselves are essential not only for the external appearance, but also for the static suffiency of the ancient building, according to recent restoration works on the Acropolis.
Since the decade of 1980s, when the then Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri had demonstrated the demand for the repatriation of the marbles, the various administrations of the British Museum continue to deny any proposal for dialogue on this matter. Nevertheless, there are specific arguments which enpower the support for the restoration of the Parthenon Marbles back in Greece:
first, because in Greece the sculptures will be exposed near the Parthenon facing the Acropolis and therefore giving to the visitor the opportunity to have a more concrete idea of the whole ancient monument,
second, because the Parthenon Marbles consist an integral part of the monument-landmark of the Greek classical civilization. The repatriation of the marbles would support the idea of Parthenon’s complete design and its architecture will be restored,
third, because the New Acropolis Museum is now complete – and therefore the Parthenon Marbles could be exposed and presented there, with equal and even bigger safety than in the British Museum.
During the ages of Lord Elgin, Britain was a world imperial power and Greece just a part of the then Ottoman Empire. Today, 200 years later, the two countries are two developed democratic European Union members, having co-operation in most fields. There has been a big change since then. In the name of Justice and Morality, in the name of appreciation for the world cultural heritage, we call the British government and the administration of the British Museum to work towards the restoration of the Parthenon Marbles. Such an action would, indeed, honour the name and history of the United Kingdom

48th Thessaloniki International Film Festival Novembro 18, 2007
A less famous than the one of Cannes, or Venice, Film Festival opened its gates this weekend; the 48th International Thessaloniki Film Festival, in northern Greece. Being the most significant event about Cinema in Greece and South East Europe, the Festival – which takes place in Thessalonika between 16 and 25th of November 2007 – will present approximately 280 films from international independent filmmakers. This year’s special guest of the Festival is the Hollywood actor John Malkovich.
