Nelson Mandela faz hoje 90 anos Julho 18, 2008

O líder do combate ao regime do apartheid Sul-Africano e Prémio Nobel da Paz, nasceu no dia 18 de Julho de 1918, filho de um conselheiro do chefe supremo do povo thembu, em Qunu, perto de Umtata, na África do Sul.

«Eu estimo o ideal de uma sociedade livre e democrática, na qual todas as pessoas convivam em harmonia e com oportunidades iguais. Esse é um ideal ao qual pretendo dedicar minha vida e que pretendo alcançar. No entanto, se for preciso, esse é um ideal pelo qual estou disposto a morrer».

Mandela foi condenado à prisão perpétua em 12 de Junho de 1964 tendo sido enviado para a prisão de máxima segurança de Robben Island.

«I am the First Accused. … I admit immediately that I was one of the persons who helped to form Umkhonto we Sizwe, and that I played a prominent role in its affairs until I was arrested in August 1962. …

During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. Apr 20, 1964 (complete speech here).

Permaneceu na prisão de Robben Island até 1982 de onde foi transferido primeiro para Pollsmoor Prison na Cidade do Cabo até Dez. 1988 e depois para a Prisão de Victor Verston (perto de Paarl) até que a campanha do ANC e a pressão internacional permitiram que viesse a ser libertado em 11 de Fevereiro de 1990, por ordem do presidente Frederik Willem de Klerk.

Nelson Mandela e Frederik de Klerk dividiram o Prémio Nobel da Paz em 1993

Mandela tornou-se o primeiro presidente negro da África do Sul assumindo o cargo em 27 de Abril de 1994 (até 1999) e comandou a transição do regime de minoria no comando, o apartheid, ganhando respeito internacional por sua luta em prol da reconciliação interna e externa.
