The Luncheon on the Grass, Edouard MannetThe Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l’herbe)
Edouard Manet – 1863
Oil on canvas 208 × 265.5 cm, 81.9 × 104.5 inches
Musée d’Orsay, Paris

Edouard Manet was born on this day in 1832 in Paris (d. Apr, 30, 1883). «He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya, but Manet reasoned that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. So disagreeing with Diderot’s theory that great art only reflected the costume of the past, Manet sought instead to follow the advice of Baudelaire…to depict a contemporary realism, to be “le peintre de la vie moderne.”»

The Scream (1893) – Edvard Munch
National Gallery, Oslo.

Edvard Munch died on Jan 23, 1944 (b. Dec. 12, 1863) was a Norwegian Symbolist painter, and an important forerunner of Expressionistic art.

(Premonition of Civil War) (1936) – Salvador Dali

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí Domènech, Marquis of Pubol or Salvador Felip Jacint Dalí Domènech (b. in Figueres, Spain on May 11, 1904 – d. January 23, 1989), known popularly as Salvador Dali, was one of the most important painters of the 20th century and his work is classified in Surrealism.
