Reminiscing Setembro 7, 2007

There’s a certain point in our lives when we indulge in reminiscing. It’s some sort of a nostalgia trip where we relive the good old days. Yes just about everybody thinks about the good old days, when life was more simple and less complicated; when feelings and emotions were more open and sincere; where you can walk or stroll anywhere not afraid of being mugged or molested; where the air was cleaner and trees and blossoms were everywhere; where joy was evident for everybody not just for the kids; where things were plentiful and no one was going hungry; where genuine love and care was evident for everybody.

How pleasant are childhood memories, where we chased butterflies among the meadows; where we go fishing on the river banks; where we fly our kites in the open fields impervious of what’s going on around; where we strolled to the ice cream parlor to indulge in our favorite ice cream sticks; where we played games of hide and seek with our favorite playmates; and where we told and retold tales of adventures and pranks to our amused gang mates.

Who could ever forget our first love, our first date, our first kiss, when we looked at our world through a rose colored glass; when everything around us was truly magical and enchanting; where we never got tired of composing endless love letters; where we indulged in hours and hours of silly love chatters to the disgust of our fellow house mates; where we exchange countless souvenirs and tokens of undying love to our beloved; where we first experienced a broken heart.

Who could ever forget those wonderful episodes in our lives. But we must face our present world once more fully satisfied that we lived a wonderful life as we face the future with a wide smile, knowing that the Lord will take us to a far better and wonderful world.

READING THE BIBLE

Probably, I should not ever write any article about:

since I fell that my reading of it is not sufficient. But sometimes it is just to hard to resist the temptation.

What is more: if you live in a country, where more than 95% of the citizens are roman-catholics, you are being thought religion since the primary school, and as a kid, you go with Mom to the church every Sunday, it is very easy to get confused about The Bible and its contents.

The Bible is considered by many people all around the world the only book worth reading, and indeed, many people can still treat it like that. I might agree with that, but… I’m The Reader. I read everything… in a way, of course. As far as I consider it interesting.

Interestingly, returning to The Bible, among those 95% catholics in Poland (or more, like some sources state), you wouldn’t find as many passionated Bible reader’s as you might have expected. People tend to base their knowledge of The Word on: religion classes (thought since the youngest ages – most of all in form of stories about events from Old and New Testaments) and from the church (in form of “The Reading” – fragments red by the priest, during the mass). And that is confusing. You might find out, that most of people do believe, in something, and they can name it, and even name the most important people involved, like:

and the others, and they know their stories as well, but they lack the understanding of the details. Even the intellectuals. Not naming the young generation, who very often choose the comfortable mask of secular humanism, or even something worse… Of course, it has its negative influence on Polish tradition, and there are some sings of its degeneration… But this is not the case.

Besides, I’m not better. But I believe. And I know, that Believing in God is an important element of Happiness. And I got the passion for books. Yet, reading The Bible is always for me an amazing adventure. And it is not easy to evaluate, what is exactly the influence of reading The Bible on my life. But maybe, it is always like that with The Bible? And, yet again, maybe all the books, all over the world, are The One? And once you read The One, you read them all? Or maybe, if you are The Reader – like me, all the books are just The Book in it’s numerous permutations? After all, isn’t “biblia” the Hebrew word for the book? Never mind. I have probably gone to far fantasizing, but what is the real truth? And where can you find it? Well, there is no doubt, that The Bible is the right place.

The difficult part of reading The Bible is not in what it is, or not, for you or other people, but in that it is, indeed, an ancient, historic treaty, full of difficult, and often misinterpreted metaphors. I like to say, as a self-invented metaphor, that it is not enough to buy a book, you have to read it too. In the case of The Bible, you could say it the other way: it is not enough to read The Bible, you have to “buy it” too…

Ainda o polémico lance do Porto – Sporting…

Hybrid human-animal embryos to be permitted?

British regulators decided on Wednesday to permit the creation of hybrid human-animal embryos for research into illnesses such as Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease and Alzheimer’s. Two teams of scientists have applied to the HFEA for permission to inject human cell nuclei into hollowed-out cow egg cells to overcome a shortage of donated human eggs. The resulting “cytoplastic hybrid” embryo, or “cybrid” would be 99.9 percent human and 0.1 percent animal. The researchers hope to use the hybrid embryos to create stem cells to help find new medical treatments. The consultation also considered other types of human-animal embryos, including “true hybrids”, created by the fusion of a human sperm and an animal egg, and “human chimeras”, where human cells are injected into animal embryos (in my opinion, simply aberrant).
Obviously such decision has generated a flow of polemics within the public opinion. The point of view of the opponents (mainly representatives of religion but also some representatives of the scientist world) is that mixing even a tiny amount of human genetic material with that of an animal is unnatural and wrong. Furthermore they maintain that such mix could also open the way for the development and diffusion of new viruses, with the risk of a terrible and uncontrollable pandemic infection.
On the other side, the proponents of this new big step in the research’s field were quoted as saying that this could represent the chance to make a breakthrough in the struggle against such terrible human’s diseases, highlighting that the ignorance and the prejudices will never lead to a final positive results.
It’s very very hard to keep a well-defined position regarding such topic. I’m catholic and I could consider the Creation as an act of love done by God. But, I’m not blind. We are struggling against terrible disease without existing medical cares; in too many countries in all over the world people is dying for the lack of medicines and the impossibility to obtain a good medical assistance. Also in the “rich” nations, diseases like the ones mentioned above take their toll. So why don’t we give the Research a chance? At first blush this COULD BE my opinion… but having second thoughts I can say that I’m so afraid too… and I’m not convinced at all…

So, which is your opinion dear friends?
