El alma del huerto… Relato. Agosto 16, 2007

Il Palio in Sienna

The well known Palio horse race has taken place every year since 1644 on July 2 and August 16. The palio is an horse racer in which the horse and rider represent one of the seventeen Contrade, or city wards. A magnificent pageant precedes the race, which attracts visitors and spectators from around the world. The team (horse and rider) is dressed in the colours and arms of the Contrade: Aquila (Eagle), Bruco (Caterpillar), Chiocciola (Snail), Civetta (Owl), Drago (Dragon), Giraffa (Giraffe), Istrice (Porcupine), Leocorno (Unicorn), Lupa (She-Wolf), Nicchio (Shell), Oca (Goose), Onda (Wave), Pantera (Panther), Selva (Forest), Tartuca (Tortoise), Torre (Tower) and Valdimontone (Ram).
Piazza del Campo – Sienna
The famous Piazza del Campo, a medieval square considered one of the most beautiful squares of the world, is the scenario for the race.

The Monkey Experiment, (or) “Why Do people act like this?

Everyday, we meet people with Radical ideas, extreme thoughts, which we can’t comprehend, or ideas and thoughts which can’t be accepted by logic or reason.

Everyday, we find strange habits, that some individuals relate to Religion, where it’s only related to old customs and habits.

Every single day we meet these people and see these actions, we can’t understand where did they come from, or based on which grounds.

Only one psychological experiment made it clear –at least for me-, why do people act or think like that.
It’s the Heritage, and legacy of a specific social environment, we may all know that, but the only different thing is that the experiment shows it from a very unique point of view.

I guess this experiment reflexes lots of our upside-down models that we meet daily in our beloved country Egypt, the land of 7000 years of Pharos 😉

Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, all of the other monkeys to be sprayed with cold water. After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result, and all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon the monkeys will try to prevent it, to prevent any monkey from trying to reach the bananas.
Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs.
To his surprise and horror, all the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be attacked.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm!
Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.
Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana.
Why not? Because as far as they know, that’s the way it’s always been done around there.

Bloggers will unite the world!

Hello everybody! I am Miltiadis, 37 years old, and I live in Greece.
It is my great honour to participate in this international Blog. As a child I grew up in the seventies with the hope that the spirit of friendship will prevail in this world of violence and of horror. Later, in the eighties, I had pen-pals all around the world. In the nineties I was one of the first Greek university students to spend a year in a foreign university, via the European student mobility project Erasmus.
People have been moving much more around the Globe in these last decades, but the time of international understanding has still a long way to go… Shall it arrive now, along with there extraordinary communication tools that are the internet and the Blogs? I really hope so. Shall we make the difference, at last, and make a friendship and understanding worldwide revolution? I may sound too romantic, but I really think the time for a *real* change has come, and those who will make that change are us, who express ourselves freely over the Internet, who get to know each other deeper than ever, who will build, at last, that World with no borders and no boundaries, that so many generations have dreamt of… Let’s do it!
Best regards to everybody.

Ao Cair das Folhas – António Nobre

Autumn Leaves I, by Wendy Ewell
Acrylic on canvas 20 inches x 24 inches

Pudessem suas mãos cobrir meu rosto,
fechar-me os olhos e compor-me o leito,
quando, sequinho, as mãos em cruz no peito,
eu me for viajar para o Sol-posto.

De modo que me faça bom encosto
o travesseiro comporá com jeito.
E eu tão feliz! – Por não estar afeito,
hei-de sorrir, Senhor, quase com gosto.

Até com gosto, sim! Que faz quem vive
órfão de mimos, viúvo de esperanças,
solteiro de venturas, que não tive?

Assim, irei dormir com as crianças
quase como elas, quase sem pecados…
E acabarão enfim os meus cuidados.

António Nobre (n. Porto a 16 Ago 1867; m. na Foz do Douro a 18 Mar 1900)
