Académica e Porto terminaram a primeira volta com um empate que premeia a capacidade de luta dos “estudantes” contra a falta de inspiração dos portistas. A primeira parte decorreu sem velocidade, monótona e sem interesse para o público, com um único remate de algum perigo às balizas, protagonizado por McCarty aos 24′ num remate já dentro da área cruzado, mas enrolado e sem força para defesa de Pedro Roma. O Porto sempre com alterações na equipa estreou Leo Lima (adquirido esta semana ao Marítimo) e o jovem Paulo Machado; no entanto a jogar sem extremos e sem velocidade o 0-0 não podia admirar. No início da 2ª. parte, Diego teve uma boa jogada mas desperdiçou o golo frente a Pedro Roma, com o remate a sair cruzado ao 2º poste mas ao lado; Aos 57′ Leo Lima teve um remate de longe para defesa com o peito de Pedro Roma. Fernandez mexeu na equipa por volta dos 61′ entrando Quaresma e Leandro (outra estreia) para os lugares de Paulo Machado e Ricardo Costa (já amarelado) e as dificuldades da Académica aumentaram substancialmente, passando finalmente o Porto a ter extremos. A Académica evidenciava já algumas dificuldades físicas e na frente Luciano era o único avançado a ter iniciativas (tirou amarelos a dois jogadores portistas), mas com alguma surpresa nos últimos dez minutos a Académica obteve alguns cantos, tendo num deles uma grande oportunidade de golo. Já em tempo de desonto uma jogada individual de Quaresma a tirar dois adversários e a rematar cruzado e forte, não alterou o resultado devido a Pedro Roma que fez a melhor defesa do jogo garantindo o empate.

A arbitragem não teve casos difíceis para analisar mas mesmo assim não teve critério disciplinar uniforme mostrando amarelos em certas jogadas quando outras faltas mais graves não foram punidas. McCarthy não aprendeu com a expulsão frente ao Boavista e novamente merecia ser expulso por agressão que passou despercebida à equipa de arbitragem.
