Mandela foi condenado à prisão perpétua em 12 de Junho de 1964 tendo sido enviado para a prisão de máxima segurança de Robben Island.

During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. Permaneceu na prisão de Robben Island até 1982 de onde foi transferido primeiro para Pollsmoor Prison na Cidade do Cabo até Dez. 1988 e depois para a Prisão de Victor Verston (perto de Paarl) até que a campanha do ANC e a pressão internacional permitiram que viesse a ser libertado em 11 de Fevereiro de 1990, por ordem do presidente Frederik Willem de Klerk.
